The RWI Petrophysics Lab is equipped for measurements of bulk density, grain density and water contents of (partly saturated rocks or soils). The Lab is equipped with various high-precision balances up to resolutions in the μg range.
Bulk density measurements are conducted using displacement methods according to the Archmides principle. Depending on sampling and sample preparation bulk wet and bulk dry density can by analysed.
He-pycnometric techniques are used for grain (or material) density. For the measurements a AccuPyc 1340 Automatic Gas Pycnometer [Micromeritics] system equipped with sample chambers of 10 cm3 and 100 cm3 is used.
Water content measurements are conducted by gravimetric techniques by drying the (partly) saturated rock or solid material to stable weight conditions
