Research Interest

My main research focus is on the interaction between climate and geosphere during the Earth’s long history based on the study of geological archives. Within this interaction, sediments are produced as a response to driving forces such as climate, tectonics and mass wasting. Reconstructing the chronostratigraphy of these sedimentary archives allows for a better understanding of how this interaction worked in the past and may work in the future, and thus increases understanding of the causes and rates of landscape evolution (timing, magnitude and frequency). As a sedimentologist and stratigrapher, I am interested in contributing to solving this puzzle by producing quantitative data based on detailed fieldwork in different geologic settings and timescales, quantitative methods applied in the laboratory, time calibration using dating techniques such as cosmogenic nuclide chronologies, and modeling. To accomplish this, I have been successfully setting-up and participating in state-of-the-art research projects in different parts of the world (e.g., Alps, Scandinavia, and Eastern Mediterranean), including external fund raising.
